The Dryden Historic District and the streets around Morley Field hold 1910s and 1920s Craftsman bungalows, and the rest of the neighborhood filled in through the 1950s. Almost none of these homes were built with a sliding door; the sliders came with later remodels, so we see a lot of 1960s to 1990s aluminum doors on tracks that were never quite level. Dingbat-style apartment buildings from the 1960s and 1970s line the side streets with standard balcony and patio sliders that landlords fix at turnover. Newer condos along University Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard have vinyl doors with builder rollers now coming due.

North Park questions
Our North Park bungalow has a 1970s aluminum slider that was added to the back of the house. Can it be fixed or is it too old?
It can be fixed. A 1970s aluminum door is a simple, heavy frame that outlasts the rollers under it many times over. We replace the rollers with steel tandem rollers, cap the worn aluminum track with a stainless cap and level the panel, which matters on these remodel doors because the opening was often cut into an old wall that has settled. The door and glass stay.
I rent out units in a North Park apartment building. Can you do the sliders between tenants?
Yes. Turnover is when most North Park sliders get fixed. We service every unit on one visit: rollers, a stainless track cap where the track is grooved, a new handle set with a mortise lock and keeper so the door locks, pile weatherstrip and screen rollers. Per-door pricing, with a lower rate for additional doors on the same trip, is on our pricing page.
The slider on my new North Park condo will not lock unless I lift the handle. Why?
The panel has dropped on its rollers, so the lock hook no longer lines up with the keeper on the jamb. Lifting the handle raises the panel just enough to catch. On newer vinyl doors the fix is usually an adjustment of the roller screws at the bottom corners of the panel and a reset of the keeper, or new rollers if the builder-grade ones are already flat.
