Fleetwood builds Southern California aluminum sliding doors with narrow frames, heavy glass panels and stainless hardware, common in coastal custom homes from La Jolla to Encinitas. When one drags, the rollers under that heavy panel have worn or salt air has pitted the track. We fit stainless rollers sized to the panel, service the track and reset the door. Oversized and multi-slide Fleetwood doors are quoted after a photo.
What we see on these doors
- Heavy glass panels on worn or pitted rollers that now drag across the track
- Salt air corrosion on rollers, track and fasteners within a few blocks of the beach
- Stainless hardware that outlasted the house around it but still needs new wheels
- Lock hooks missing the keeper once a heavy panel settles
- Multi-slide and pocket Fleetwood doors that need a measured quote
Where Fleetwood doors are in San Diego
Fleetwood doors are a Southern California product, and in this county they live on the coast. We see them in the custom homes of La Jolla, Point Loma, Del Mar and Encinitas, in the newer ocean-view builds of Carlsbad and Oceanside, and in the hillside remodels above Pacific Beach where an architect specified big glass and thin frames.
These are not builder doors. Someone chose a Fleetwood for the view, the narrow sightlines and the stainless hardware, and paid for a door that would stand up to salt air. The door does. The rollers under it still wear, because every roller does, and the panels are heavy enough that worn rollers make themselves known fast.
How to identify a Fleetwood door
The look gives it away before the label does. Fleetwood doors have thin aluminum frames, very large glass panels, often floor to ceiling, and a flat, modern profile with an anodized or painted finish. The hardware is stainless steel rather than the painted zinc or plastic found on tract doors.
Open the door and check the edge of the sliding panel for a Fleetwood label or mark. Also look at the bottom of the panel where it meets the track: the rollers on these doors are large and the track is a heavier section than a tract door uses.
If the label is gone, a photo of the frame corner from inside, the handle and the bottom corner of the panel at the track lets us confirm the door. On Fleetwood doors we also ask for the panel height and width, because the rollers are sized to the panel weight and we order them to match.

What wears out on a Fleetwood door
Rollers, under load. A Fleetwood panel can carry a very large insulated glass unit, and two roller assemblies take all of it. When the wheel bearings wear, the panel settles and the door becomes hard to slide. On a door this size, you feel it immediately.
Salt air is the second story. Within a few blocks of the water, plain steel pits and seizes, and even stainless hardware collects a crust of salt and sand in the track that grinds the wheels. A scraping noise or metal dust along the track means the wheel has stopped rolling and started sliding.
As on any slider, a dropped panel takes the lock out of play: the hook misses the keeper and the door will not lock. Weatherstrip on the ocean side also wears through sooner than it does inland.
Parts and what we carry
Fleetwood doors get stainless steel rollers. Stainless resists the salt air these doors live in, and a steel ball-bearing wheel carries the panel weight without flattening. A 1-1/2 inch wheel is a common size on these heavy aluminum doors, and we match the roller to the panel after seeing the door or your photos. Our stainless versus standard roller guide explains why plain steel does not last on the coast.
For a pitted or worn track we fit a stainless steel track cap where the track profile allows, or service and clean the existing stainless track. We carry mortise locks, keepers and pile weatherstrip that suit these doors, and we set roller height with the adjustment screws at the bottom corners once the panel is re-hung.
Fleetwood panels are heavy. We plan a two-person lift for the larger ones and tell you in advance.
Repair, replace, or a measured quote
Repair. A Fleetwood door is built to be serviced, the frame is aluminum that will not rot, and new stainless rollers bring back the glide for a fraction of a replacement panel. A standard two-panel Fleetwood slider is priced per door with stainless rollers; see our pricing page.
Some Fleetwood jobs are a measured quote rather than a flat price: oversized panels, multi-slide and pocket configurations, lift-slide hardware, and any job where rollers must be ordered to the panel weight. We quote those after a photo or a short visit, and the quote is the price.
Glass is always a measured quote. A fogged unit in a Fleetwood door is replaced inside the frame with tempered safety glass; the size and weight of these units mean we measure first. See glass replacement.
Fleetwood door repair across San Diego
Most of our Fleetwood work runs along the coast: La Jolla, Point Loma, Coronado, Pacific Beach, Del Mar, Encinitas, Carlsbad and Oceanside. We also see them in the view homes of Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Scripps Ranch, where salt air is not the issue but panel weight still is.
Coastal Fleetwood doors always get stainless rollers. Inland ones can run steel ball-bearing rollers rated for the weight, though stainless is a sensible upgrade on a door this expensive. Either way, send a photo of the panel edge, the bottom corner at the track and the whole door with a rough panel size, and we will tell you whether it is a flat per-door job or a measured quote before we come out. Our track repair page covers the stainless cap option.
Fleetwood: common questions
How do I know if my sliding door is a Fleetwood?
Fleetwood doors have thin aluminum frames, very large glass panels and stainless steel hardware, with a flat modern profile. Check the edge of the sliding panel for a Fleetwood label. If it is gone, send a photo of the frame corner from inside, the handle and the bottom corner of the panel at the track and we will confirm.
Why is my Fleetwood door so heavy to slide?
The rollers have worn under a heavy panel. Fleetwood doors carry large insulated glass units on two roller assemblies, so when the bearings wear the panel settles onto the track and you feel the full weight. Salt air speeds this up near the beach. New stainless steel rollers sized to the panel and a serviced track restore the glide.
Do Fleetwood doors need stainless rollers?
On the coast, yes. Plain steel rollers pit and seize within a few years of salt air, and most Fleetwood doors in San Diego sit within a mile of the ocean. Stainless steel rollers with ball-bearing wheels resist the corrosion and carry the weight. Inland, steel ball-bearing rollers rated for the panel work, but stainless is still a sensible upgrade.
Is a Fleetwood door repair a flat price or a quote?
A standard two-panel Fleetwood slider is a flat per-door price with stainless rollers, shown on our pricing page. Oversized panels, multi-slide and pocket configurations, lift-slide hardware and rollers that must be ordered to the panel weight are quoted after a photo or a visit. Glass is always measured and quoted separately.
Can you fix the track on a Fleetwood door?
Yes. Salt and sand grind the track and the wheels together, so we clean and inspect the track with every roller job. If the track is worn or pitted and the profile allows, we fit a snap-on stainless steel track cap over it instead of replacing the track. Deep damage on a custom track profile is a measured quote.
