The OB cottages built before 1931 did not come with sliding doors; the sliders arrived with 1950s and 1960s additions and with the two- and three-story apartment buildings that filled the blocks between Voltaire Street and Newport Avenue. Those balcony doors are aluminum on steel rollers, and within a few blocks of the water the rollers rust solid and the track pits. Newer homes along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and in Point Loma Heights have vinyl and some heavy aluminum doors facing the ocean. For anything west of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard we fit stainless rollers and a stainless track cap, and we tell landlords to budget for the same at turnover.
Getting to you in Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach is where I-8 ends: the freeway runs straight into Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, and from there Newport Avenue, Voltaire Street and West Point Loma Boulevard reach every street in the neighborhood. We also come in on Nimitz Boulevard from Point Loma. Dog Beach and Robb Field mark the north end by the river channel, the farmers market takes over the 4900 block of Newport Avenue on Wednesday afternoons, and Sunset Cliffs Natural Park runs south along the bluffs. Parking is tight near the beach, so we allow extra time for apartment jobs. From central San Diego it is about 10 to 15 minutes down I-8.

Ocean Beach questions
My OB apartment slider leaves rust streaks on the track. Is the door done?
No, the rollers are. Rust streaks and a gritty, grinding slide mean the steel roller wheels have corroded in the salt air and are scraping the aluminum track. The door frame and glass are usually fine. We replace the rollers with stainless steel versions, clean the track and snap a stainless track cap over the pitted section so the new wheels have a smooth surface to run on.
I own a rental in Ocean Beach. How often should I expect to replace sliding door rollers?
Standard steel rollers near the beach wear out well before they would inland, and a west-facing door is the worst case. Stainless rollers and a stainless track cap stretch that out considerably, which is why we recommend them for any OB rental within walking distance of the water. Having the lock and keeper checked at the same visit avoids the next tenant call about a door that will not latch.
Can you fix a vacation rental door in Ocean Beach between guests?
Yes, if we can get a same-week slot and the door is a standard two-panel slider. Tell us the check-out and check-in times and what the door is doing, and we bring stainless rollers, a track cap and a lock set so the job finishes in one visit. Heavy multi-slide doors on rebuilt homes along Sunset Cliffs need a photo first so we can quote and order the right rollers.
